Har jag blivit recenserad av en robot?

Har ni hört talas om tjänsten Hello Music, där man kan ladda upp egna låtar av olika slag och få dem bedömda med avseende på marknadspotential och eventuell vidare distribution?

Jag kunde inte låta bli, utan laddade upp några av mina alster på prov. Först valde jag en av mina kortare, och faktiskt en av de första låtar jag gjorde på dator, ”Hornbass” (sedermera även på Spotify):

 

 

Efter några dagar kom bedömningen – och den var ju sannerligen inte dålig:

Performance:
Instruments – Lead
We felt the instrumental leads on this track were tuneful, interesting and well-articulated. There’s no overplaying here, and nothing seems to be lacking either. Spot on.

We think your rhythmic elements on this release can hang with the best of them. Tight, clean and interesting playing.
Energy
We thought your track had rousing energy that moved us as listeners. You sound confident in your musical skills and the parts you’re playing.
Songwriting:
Hook
Ah, the elusive hook. A great hook can redeem a troubled song, or get a great payday for a top-notch band. Your hooks grabbed us. Excellent work.
Song Structure
We thought this song had a logical structure and all the parts were distinct. A good song structure generally has both repetition and surprise, and we thought you nailed it.
Production:
Arrangement / Instrumentation
Having a good arrangement, with the right instrumentation, helps give listeners a better sense of what’s happening melodically and harmonically. Your arrangements were just right. Nice job.
Production Quality
All the elements in the mix here sound clear, and they coalesce into a cohesive sound that suits the composition. This is very much its own art form. Nice work.
Mix / Blend
In the studio, a good mix separates the men from the boys. It’s relatively easy to get good raw tracks, but mixing them right is an art unto itself. Clearly a lot of time and work went into the mix here. It’s paying off.

Nu undrar jag förstås om Hello Music verkligen har levande människor som sitter och lyssnar på allt som laddas upp eller om de här omdömena har genererats av något program. Människa eller programvara? Jag lutar nog åt det senare. Även om man försöker verka väldigt specifik i sina omdömen med ”elusive hook” osv., så förefaller det ändå lite för allmänt hållet. En människa skulle nog ha reagerat mera på att musiken generellt sett är lite okonventionell, bl.a. på områden man redan tar upp.

Jag prövade så med en låt till, en lång monoton historia med syntetisk röst, som passande nog heter ”I’m Machine Machine Perhaps”:

 

 

Den här gången tror jag i alla fall att jag lyckades förvirra algoritmerna lite:

No Excellent Qualities – Unfortunately, this release was not tagged with any excellent qualities. This doesn’t happen often, and usually indicates a major flaw or problem with the release.

Med tanke på att rösten i denna komposition är Macintoshs syntetiska röst ”Victoria”, så är följande kommentar intressant:

Lead vocals are one of the most important elements to the effectiveness of a song. They can create a style or mood to a song that would otherwise not exist. We often tag this because the vocals are out of tune, the artist’s breathing is getting in the way of the melody, or the differences between the loud and soft parts don’t make musical sense. It may help to do some vocal warm ups before you perform, check out some free lesson videos online or even hire a vocal coach in order to maximize your full vocal potential.

Sedan har Hello Music synpunkter på hur kompositionen håller ihop rytmiskt:

The timing is an often overlooked, but absolutely essential, part of a song. Small changes can make the difference between the timing sounding ”tight” and the song falling apart. Things that can amount to errors in timing and togetherness are: an improper understanding of time signature and meter, poorly articulated phrases, or playing a song at an unnatural tempo. In many cases, timing problems are not because of poor musicianship, but poor communication between players. […] Once a suitable tempo has been established, you may opt to record using a metronome (a.k.a. ”click track”). While not exactly a liberating experience, this is an effective way to keep all players on the same beat.

Hello Music är också inne på att den här kompositionen har en dålig struktur, att den har en introduktion som är för lång och att ”there is too much delayed gratification”. Det kan det ju ligga något i – även om den här typen av musik bygger just på långsamhet och upprepning. Hello Music vill inte visa sig omöjliga utan intygar att de visst kan ”uppskatta en oortodox låtstruktur” men den bör ändå vara tillräckligt distinkt, så att lyssnaren kan känna igen de grundläggande elementen. Sedan citerar de ändå en modern kompositör:

Melody is a very common hurdle in songcraft, and is a challenge for even the most experienced songwriters. ”A melody is not merely something you can hum,” legendary composer Aaron Copland once said. When we think a melody needs work, it often sounds too ”static” in its shape, and need extra movement or content. This is the case when the melodic line is a simple doubling of another part, or lacks a unique contour or phrasing.

Hello Music föreslår också lite bättre arbete med mikrofoner och mixning och säger i slutet av den långa genomgången att ”one or more instruments seem somewhat off”. Som om det inte räckte med Copland bussar man så även Burt Bacharach på mig genom att citera hans uttalande ”never be ashamed to write a melody that people remember”. Ska tänka på det.
